Bergum falls under the Municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel (Fries), Tietjerksteradeel (Dutch).
Tsjerke is the Frisian word for church. Until 1989 the Dutch name was the official municipality name, but the current Friesian name is the official municipality name today.
The capital of the municipality, Tytsjerksteradiel is Bergum/Burgum.
Burgum is situated in the North of the Netherlands.
I went to visit my uncle who has a farm in Burgum, he raises Friesian horses.
His farm is very old and was built in 1736.
His farm is built in a style head-shoulder-body, in Dutch (kop-hals-romp).
Bergum is a lovely village, it is old and has a lot to offer. I caught a bus from Leeuwarden, and then walked to the farm from the bus stop in Bergum, which took me on a lovely route. Beautiful houses, lining a winding road to the farm. It was so peaceful and tranquil and had just rained, so it smelt so fresh. There were lovely farms dotted along the road.
The road to their farm and surrounding views.
The road to their farm is beautiful, just like a country road, and one would not beleive it, but if you follow the road out you come to a lake, (weer) called the Princess Margeret Canal, (Princess Margeriet Kanaal), where you can fish and just watch all the boats go by and of course just walk along the road and enjoy the nature, peace and tranquility or even walk your dog as my friend (who is also my aunt), Beppie and myself did.
I enjoy going here, Burgum has a lovely shopping mall, the people are very friendly and greet you and are very helpful.
There is a war monument (Oorlogsmonument), in memory for a bomber crew, of the Whitley no. 78 squadron no. 4 group of the Royal Air Force, that was shot down in September 1941. Commander Thorpe and his men lost their lives. The unveiling of the plaque was done in September 1967 by Commander Thorpes, parents, from Tunbridge wells (kent). The men who lost their lives were : Geoffrey Carman, David Victor Logan, Cyril Vincent Matheson, Charles James Storer en Francis Berhard Thorpe. The citizens of Burgum buried the crew in the cementery, 'Kruiskerk' of Burgum. ( this information is from National comite 4 en 5 mei (Oorlogsmonumenten). http://www.4en5mei.nl/content/1944/burgum_monument_in_de_kruiskerk. I have translated it from Dutch to English). The village of Bergum (Burgum), grew up around the Saint Nicholaas Convent/Barra Convent, in around the late twelfth century.
At the end of the sixtienth centuary the convent was destroyed, but the convent church was spared. This church today is known as "The KruisKerk" and is a Hervormde Kerk (Dutch Reformed Church). To think this was once a Catholic church.
Adres: Nieuwstad 5, Burgum (Bergum) (gemeente Tytsjerksteradiel)
My mother and father, her parents, brother and sister are all buried here.
I love Bergum, and enjoy every visit when I go there. I also love hearing Fries when it is spoken, it is so sad that this language is fading out, it should be kept as Frieslands language after all it is their heritage.
As they say in Fries "Oant Sien", good bye.

Flag: yellow with a blue cross centered with arms of 1/5 flagheight; in top hoist in yellow a black horn with a red cord. The blue cross reminds of the Augustine monastery as well as the four canals converging in Burgum. The fish symbolizes fishing in the Burgumermar, and also Christianity - symbol of Christ. The horn refers to the arms of the municipal division of Trynwxe2lden and to the nobility which used to live in Burgum. The tree is a symbol of the forest in the environment; the trees have economic value because of tree cultivation and the barking mill, which alas has disappeared.
