We walked from Nij Altoenae to Westhoek. The weather was perfect, sunshining, a light haze, and the most wonderful feeling of feeling freeand seeing Het Bildt, (Frisian Clay soil region).
The scenery was beautiful (to me that is, if you like farming area's).Here is a photo we took of a ploughed field and you can see in the background a farmhouse surrounded by a clump of trees and that there is a haze or mist hanging over the fields as the farmhouse seems slightly clouded, this I love this is the best time of the year for me Autumn.
Next to the side of the road (where a farmhouse was situated), we found this very friendly rabbit, and could not resist taking a photo of (him or her).
As we were walking along we came across fileds with all sorts of crops, the carrotts were the most beautiful deep orange I have ever seen (they do not seem to be so dark in the shops), it just made you want to bend down and pluck one out and eat it. Though I had noticed that the carrots were grown in farrows and planted like potatoes and not growing under the ground but high above unusual to me that was. I have never seen so much acerage of ground growing so many carrots.
As we were walking towards Westhoek we came across another field with some sort of crop growing which I thought was spinach (it looked like this for me from a distance), Marja informs me it is voederbieten (food for pigs). It reminds me of a oversized turnip.
We then came to a inner dyk and on the corner was the beach house of the Biltpollen, where the people and the municipality had their coucil meetings and make their decisions over the bildt. It was built in 1899. These meetings took place on the second floor.
We continued in our walk and saw a field in the distance with alot of white heads , thinking these were flowers we were most surprised to find that it was a crop of Butter lettuce, (Icebergsla), but they were lying on the ground just rotting, we came to the conclusion that perhaps there was pesticide on the crop, or there was perhaps a abundance of lettuce for the market, we will never know. I sure would like to know!!
Then there was this house built in 18??, and it looked just like a railway house, I could just picture a railway line running through, nice platforms full of hanging baskets and pretty flowers, and a tea room. In the picture you can see that it has recently been renovated ( I seem to think that it was faced brick before), and has since then been plasterd.
Then this beautiful flower, what joys one finds in the country or should I say pollen land. (meaning reclaimed land).
Till our next excursion.
