Weidum

We went to Weidum, it was an overcast day threatening to rain, but luckily it held off.
When entering Weidum, it felt like a very peaceful village and it was very pretty.
The main road through Weidum was very busy this day as the highway (snellweg), was closed off for road work.
Top Left : Houses with garages.Top and bottom right : some houses, bottom left : a house being renovated.
We then continued our walk and came across a set of houses with built in garages, most unusual in Friesland.
There were quite a few large houses which I have the feeling thatperhaps they used to be houses for wealthy people in earlier times, though some of  these houses are used for businesses now and some arestill used to be lived in.
There are very lovely characterestic roads or lanes in Weidum to walk down.
some of the lanes.
Therewas this farm (boederij), opposite the church, I guess that in theearly 1300's the area around the church must have been open (strange tohave a farm so close) and perhaps the houses were built later.
This road or lane led to the church which was built around the 1300's.
Church and cementary.Coat of arms used as a step, Marja's foot on iit.
Inthe church graveyard there was this gravestone most unusual.  As wewere walking out of the church grounds we noticed once again that agravestone bearing a 'Coat of Arms' was used as a step, here is apicture of Marja's foot on it.  How Napoleon could have done this, desecrating all that signified nobility. Here is also a photo of thegravestone with the coat of arms on.
Buma Leen family graveyard.
As we walked out of the church grounds we met a very friendly man who then told us about the 'Buma Leen' graveyard.
The 'Domna State' stood west of the church in Weidum which was thenunder the municipality 'Baarderedeel', but is now under themunicipality 'Littenserediel'.
The 'state' used to stand nearly on the edge of the hill (terp). When the 'state' stood there it is not known. By this 'state' therelies the family graveyard of the Buma's.
Mr Wiardus Buma, said in his will, that what ever profit his estatemade, would be used by his descendents for their scholarships.
Later the 'state' belonged to a noble but it was not his residence.
A farm stands now in place of the 'State', it is not open to the public.
one can see the 'Coat of Arms' on the gate pillars and through thegate bars one can see the gravestones of the graves of the 'Buma Leen'family.
As we walked out of the church grounds we met a very friendly man who then told us about the 'Buma Leen' graveyard.
Goat, horses and Dutch Iris Lilly. Leaded window with ivy growing around it, flowers.
Weidum village
Weidum, a village in Littenseradiel municipality, Fryslxe2n province. It used to be in the former municipality of Baarderadeel, with (1958):552; (1974): 753 inhabitants. Until c. 1900 it was the municipal seatof Baarderadeel. Here was Dekemastate (fortified stately house), thehome of Earl (jonker) E. D. van Beyma, demolished by a tornado in 1898, which ended a 700-year history of glorious deeds.
In 1919 Hanso Henricus Schotanus a` Steringa Idzerda invented radio-broadcasting in Weidum.
Weidum is also known for the game of "keatsen", French: Jeu de Pelote, while the village is renowned for its brassband (fanfare), its "boerenkapel" (farmers' humpapaorchestra) and its drumband.
Nickname: Weidumer roeken (religious fanatics)

Flag:blue with a four-stepped red hoist-triangle, of which the fourth stepforms the triangle-top at 7/15 flaglength; the triangle charged with ayellow six-pointed star of 2/5 flagheight; a yellow lengthened steppedchevron with a width of 4/15 flaglength with the top at 11/15flaglength.
From the 18th till the 20th century the "grietenijhuis"(municipal council-house) of Baarderadeel was in Weidum. That's why theCoA has the colors blue and red. The star is from the municipal arms(and represents Weidum also as former municipal seat). The step-gablesrefer to the noble houses (states) of the Dekema's, the Hania's, the Papma's and the Wobbema's. The fleurs-de-lis are from the arms of Dekema and Hania. The lozenge is from the Walta-arms and symbolizes law-administration.
In the 18th century the municipal courthouse was in Weidum.
In the flag the step-gables from the arms and the star are represented. The colors are derived from the arms.

As we continued our walk back to the main road we saw someinteresting sights like this goat, lord knows what he was up to, wetherhe was getting  up or down, it did make us laugh though.  Also theseponies, they really had a lot of hair (mane should I say), one wastempted to get a comb and play with their manes and make weirdhairdo's.  There were also some lovely flowers in the gardens and alongour walk, like this beautiful 'Dutch Iris' and this garden with itrustic wooden wheel-barrow with a stone statue on and pot plants on,also this leaded window with Ivy growing around it.  Also this graniteplaque with this studios name on with a coat of arms on, could it bethe coat of arms of 'Roscher'? and this wooden board advertisment ofthis company, Boubedrieu (Fries) I think, it would be Bouwbedrijf(Dutch) could be a builder or carpenter in English. I like this verymuch in villages.  These hens, I love hens, my mother in law loved hensand roosters this picture is for her (sadly she has died). Look how youtie your daffodils up after they have bloomed, then you will get a lotthe following year I am told if you do this, it also keeps your gardentidied, and you let the leaves rot by themselves, I truly have had alesson in this as your bulbs will accumealate.  we walked back down themain road, which had a reastaurant named 'De Vijf Sinnen' I think it isFries, does anyone know what it means?, I went up and looked at themenu board and it had my mouth watering. You could choose from two, three and four course meals, so there is something to suit everyonespockets in price. This lane leads up the side of the restaurant the'Vijf Sinnen' which is the white building on your left.
Houses next to the Vijf Sinnen, walking route and bench with Marja on.
Apparantly where men used to stable their horse and cart for the night, has now been renovated into a scottish hall with bar.
We continued on our way along the main road and found this woodenbench that was built around the tree which Marja took as an opputunityto sit down as we had walked quiete a bit today.
One can walk along walking and cycle routes from Wiedum there are a lot of villages near by. Well till then, bye bye.
