Hijum : 20-02-06.

Hijum belongs to the municipallity of Leeuwarderadeel.

It is a very small village in Friesland,(Fryslxe2n). Hijum is the same in Dutch and Frisian.

The name means "heem", (farm) yard.

Hijum was built on a terp,- (mound), which nearly completely disappeared. There used to be a stately fortified castle called Aebinga State, (which no longer exists).

Old rail line from Finkum to Hijum.

We entered Hijum from walking along the "Spoardok", (old rail line, from Leeuwarden to Dokkum), from Finkum.

It was a very cold, windy, rauw day.
The wind was blowing so hard that your eyes waterd and froze on your cheeks.
walking towards Hijum, our first impression was, that of a small village,  how quaint and peaceful it was.
Saint Nicolas Church.
It felt like a special moment for me, when I saw this church.
There are two churches in Hijum, one called 'Bethel', built in around 1877, which is a new church compared to the Roman architecture, Saint Nicholas church, built in around 1150, which some portions of the church are around 850 years old and has changes in its structure over the centuries, you can see this in the brick work.
Once again like (Finkum), if you want to view the church you can obtain the key from the church caretaker who lives a short walking distance from the church at Skoallestrjitte 16.
There are not many services held here, only a few, few times a year.
The cementry by Saint Nicholas Church was very interesting, there was a statue by one grave of a ice skater who had died, and you can see by approaching the church that it was built on a terp (like I mentioned above in my text), and there is a ditch filled with water (sloot), surrounding the terp where the church stands on.

Bethel Church bell tower in distance.

I like the old milk farms.  Outside this one house they had a statue of a farmer with his milk cans, I love this.My father has a milk can, he painted some ships on and uses it as a umbrella stand.

A wooden house.

When we walked around everyone greeted us, and there were somenice houses, like this wooden one for instance and this quaint whiteone, I just loved them.

A quaint little house.

I believe there is also a bed and breakfast in Hijum, which is about 10 kilometers from Leeuwarden.

you can look on this web-site for more information. www.weekend.nl, then type in on the form : place: Hijum. region: Friesland. You will then come into the right location.

So if you want to experience staying in absolute peace and quiet, yetstill enjoy going to towns this is the place to go, also Finkum. (seemy log on Finkum).

An Old Vauxhall.

We also came across this old Vauxhall, so nice... I sometimes wish I lived in Friesland before the 1500's.

There have been changes in Friesland scenery, that I think have not beentoo their advantage, in fact have ruined it, but that is my impression, other people will no doubt have their own idea's.

We have a saying in English, 'to each his own', meaning, each person has his own idea....

Well after having seeing so much in such a little village, (which was asurprise and we enjoyed it very much), we turned tail and walked backto Finkum with the wind pushing us all the way back.

in gold a green mound issuing from the base, with on top two jumpinggreen Frenchmen with open red mouths; the mound charged with a lyingsilver crescent below three golden pennies placed 2-1.

Flag:

two wavy horizontal stripes yellow and green, proportioned 2:1; in theyellow stripe in the canton a jumping green frog with open red mouth. The frog with a height of 7/12 flagheight.

Hijum means:

land bathed by water 'door water omspoeld land' - the mound (terp) is evident in the arms.
The crescent represents the convent Marixebngaarde and the family xc6binga (AE in one letter).
The three pennies represents the patron saint of the church: St.Nicholas.The frogs refer to the village nickname, 'kikkerts' in use for over acentury. (it possibly refers to the frogs in the water around the terp).
The flag is a simplification of the arms and shows only one of the frogs.
