Easterein (Oosterend): High Tea - Friesland.

One would wonder why I am writting about an English custom on myweb-site! It is because I had experienced just that, a High EnglishTea, held in my house in honor of a birthday.

The birthday was for my sons girlfriend, Anita.

A friend of Anita's who is fries and lives in a little village in Friesland called Easterein, (Oosterend) caters High Tea's.

There was a knock at my door and there was this lovely person with a very friendly character put out her hand and shook mine (which is the custom in Friesland and the rest of Holland) and of course all over the world, and introduced herself.

My name is Marian Sijszeling and I have come to give you a High Tea.

Well Marian then came bustling in with all her goods, and then askedme to show her how the kettle, oven and microwave worked, once she wasaquainted how everything worked she then said 'you may now leave thekitchen and leave everything to me, I will be doing everything, pourthe tea, eats etc'. What a treat, to sit down and not do a thing exceptwatch the proceedings.

Out came a white linnen table cloth, then a lovely tea service witha rose on, matching teapots, trays, cake plates, lovely bowls for thehome-made strawberry jam, clotted cream, and whipped cream for theEnglish scones, not to mention the Quich, cranberry muffins, caramelsquares, and savoury sandwiches, with all sorts of fillings.

We were absolutely full and repleat, the only time there was silencewas when everyone was eating. There was so much work and preperationput into this I was amazed that Marian did this all on her own. AfterTea when we asked if we could help with the clearing and washing up wewere not allowed to help.

If you happen to like English wares like I do, Marian's mother has a shop in the village where you can purchase crockery, linnen etc, and Marian serves English tea there. Marian I wish you great success in your new adventure, and I thank you for a most enjoyable afternoon. It was a great success....
