Franeker/Frjentsjer 2.

Marja myself and her friend from web-log Silverlady went to Franeker, this was our second time there, which I may add was alright for me I just love Franeker, it has a lot to offer and many beautiful sights.

We parked the car just outside Franeker and walked past a school andturned into a road just behind the Bolwerk (a very high terp) that runsthrough Franeker.

It was very overcast, threatening to rain, but on we went.

We walked along a street that had houses flanking the right of thestreet, which reminded me of workers houses (ardbeidhuizen) from longago, it had a very lovely feeling and very pretty. The top left picture is Marja walking ahead of me by these houses.

We then came across an entrance to a park with a wooden bridge spanning across the stream (very beautiful and very rest full). The top right picture . and the bottom left picture is of the stream taken from the bridge.

Once inside what a surprise was in store for us, as Silverlady andMarja carried on walking I started to get very excited and took photo'swith my camera and just enjoyed the relaxed feeling and atmosphere ofthis park. There was an aviary with all kinds of different birds in.This little yellow one canary or budgie (?). Bottom right picture. There was also a parrot and many other kinds of birds, wonderful forbird watchers, children and people who enjoy looking at wild life.

There was a pond in the the park and in the middle of it was thiswooden roofed hut for the birds (ducks etc),  this is what I love aboutthe Friesian and Dutch people is that they think of wonderful things, like this.

Another bridge spanning the pond in the park.  Absolutely beautiful.Preservation of the wild life. These ducks look pretty ugly, but yet somehow attractive dont you think.
Mother duck watching over her ducklings.  How sweet.

The Martina house-town castle, (Martinastins-stadtskasteel) above-back of the stins, was built in 1498,by a nobleman Hessel van Martena. The Martena's livedhere until the year 1696, from then wealthy citizens lived there. Lateron until 1983 it contained the offices of the municipality ofFranekeradeel, it is the only surviving tower house in Franeker.  In2006 it was turned into a Museum.

My father Anno Joseph Schaap, (who died recently) told me that hehelped paint and restore the celing in the planeterium  after thesecond world war (if I remember correctly). My father was a painter anda very good artist. I have wonderful paintings that he painted ofFraneker.

The photographs of Franeker Station are from the curtessy of stationsweb.nl you will find a link to this site on my links panel on my site.

The Franeker university, (above)was the second biggest university after Leiden university, it wasfounded in Franeker the year 1585, making it the cultural center of theNorth in the country.  The most known person of the Frisian Academy wasthe Frisian Philosopher, Descartes. It was dissolved by Napoleon in theyear 1811, and was replaced in 1815 by an Athenauem School whichcontinued in existence until 1843.  There is still part of theuniversity still in existence today in Franeker, it is the FrieslandBank building, as the photograph (below) will showyou. It is a great shame that this university was pulled down as theonly university in the north is the Groningen university, the northdesperately needs another one.

The flagwas in Hesman's flagbook of 1708 with 4 horizontal stripes YBYB. On theadvice of Klaes Sierksma the flag became simply YB, to avoid confusionwith the flag of Friesland's capital, Leeuwarden (BYBY). In 1984Franeker merged with Franekeradeel and it is not known which (if any)flag is used as city-flag.
