Hallum.
Just before entering Hallum. We parked the car by the Saint Nicholas church in Hijum. It was not as cold as last week.We walked out of Hijum and just as we came to the main road where we had to cross over, was a farm (boerderij), on the gate posts were tablets of marble and the name 'Oessinga State', was engraved upon them. where this farm stands today the actual 'Oessinga State' stood, but was pulled down.
We then crossed the main road (dodging traffic), you cross this road at your own peril, (so do be careful when you cross it, the road is very busy),and then walked along the service road to Hallum, it was about 2 kilometers from Hijum, to walk there.
This snug little farmhouse was tucked away amongst these trees.
When we entered Hallum there was next to the service road on your right,a bicycle-walking route, which you could take if you wanted to, it ran along side a ditch filled with water, (sloot). We decided not to take this route, as were not sure where we would come out, and if we could cross the ditch at a later stage, so we kept safe and followed the service road into Hallum.Hallum belongs to the municipality of Ferwederadeel.
A beautiful building.
The village flag is made up of the colours black, (which covers a third of the length and breadth of the flag), and seven different colours, running horizontally, red on top followed by orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and ending with the colour violet at the bottom, which in total gives you eight different colours on the flag. When it was issued I am not sure.Hallum has three churches,a Reformed Church(Reformeerdekerk), 'Saint Martinus Church', (Sint MartinusKerk).
This church was built on a terp (mound), and was built around the 1300.
The spire of Saint Martinus Church in the background, that replaced the tower.
The design was one of Romanesque style and later changes show that it was changed over the centuries, change from Romanesque to Gothic. The saddle roof tower that existed in 1804 collapsed and was replaced by a spire tower in 1806.This church was burnt by one of the rivalry parties during a feud. The Nave was built from brick and tuft stones, which was used to build the first church.
The front of Saint Martinus Church.
The buttresses were not built for support to the building, but to hide after the reformation, the decorative brickwork from catholic times. The church tower was used for Napoleons optical telegraph network when in around 1795 the southern 'transit-arm', (A corruption of the french, Corps Du Garde), called 'Koarte Gaerde', housed French soldiers.
The cementry, with the houses built in a square facing on.
The Saint Martinus church cementry was surrounded by houses built in a square facing on to the cementry, they were very close indeed, I would not like to live there
.
The Gereformeerde Church.
Gereformeerde Church, designed by Tjeerd Kuipers. who was well known, as an architectand for building churches on corners and making maximum use of available space.
A Mennonite Curch, which was built in neo classical design, though this popularity in design dwindled by 1910, when this church as built.
We then walked through the main shopping street which was lovely, there were old Dutch buildings and houses it had a lovely feeling,(sfeer).
I must say villages are very clean, compared to large towns.
A Bust of a Bishop or Priest.
We then started to wind our way back to Hijum, and we found a bust of a Bisshop or Priest?, he had a very stern face, but at the same time I had a feeling that if you had come to him you would have been given good advice from him, he made Marja laugh.
Bischuit, Biscuit Factory.
On our right there was a biscuit (bischuit)factory called 'Hallema', it was a very old building and believe it or not is still run today by the fifth generation and in the same place, amazing, how wonderful to know that in this day and age it is still running by the same family, I love this sort of tradition.
Snow drops
My brother in law who is itallian, his family has run their farm in the north of Italy, for a thousand years and is still today. With this we walked back to Hijum.
A watchful eye on us
