We went to oudbildtdijk and we could not find it, until we had driven right through to Nij Altonae, well Marja and I got the map out (and I could have died laughing), as we discovered that we were actually driving through Oudbidtdijk andthat the road we were driving on was built on a dyk called just that,it was a little village joining Nij Altonae, and had very pretty littledyk houses, running along the side of the road very picturerisque.
We then decided to go to Vrouwenparochie and continue our walk from there, so back in the car and away we went.
Vrouwenparochie:When we arrived it started to rain very heavely, but this did not stop us, armed with our umbrella and good humour we got out of the car and tackled the weather, after all this is Holland,( Friesland should I say), you begin your conversations with the weather and end the day with talking of the weather.
It was very cloudy, grey and the rain did not look like it was going to let up. We came across a church and was most surprised when we walked around the church that we came into a sort of square that led you to the village centre, how quaint and what a lovely little house was on this square with double front doors and little iron grids on each door, and wooden shutters painted green white and red with a design on, (I cannot remember the design, but I remember looking at the design and thinking it looked a bit like a sand timer, that they used to used in the old days for counting time).
We then carried on and found a sign saying cycle track (fiets tourisme pad). This was very inconspeckuas, as it was in between two houses, and it looked like their driveways, but after alot of determination we found the right track and it was worth it.
The track wound itself through farm land and housing, what was nice we came across a pony, sheep grazing on a terp (Hill), and the farmer had just ploughed his potatoe field and there was still loose potatoes, I bent down to pick one up, and with all the rain the field was very soggy and I nearly fell into the field head first, but I regained my balance and held on to the potatoe, which I proudly showed Marja afterwards, (after I could stop myself from laughing), I could just imagine me having a mud bath.
When we came to a bend in the path I nearly gave such a yell as there was a man dressed up as a cowboy leaning against a tree (but it was a statue cut out of wood), very well made it looked so real.
We came to the end of the path which led on to the main road to Vrouwenparochie and we walked quite a way up, (by this time the rain had eased off), and there was a herd of dairycattle in a field lovely dark coloured and some white and dark, but oh those big brown cow eyes do attract you some how, after saying hello to them we started our walk back to the car and came across a house that was built on company land, and it reminded me of the t.v. series "Dallas" that I used to watch in Rhodesia on television it was so nice but I forgot to take a photograph of it, though I did take one of marja as she was wet through.
It was a lovely day, I love walking in the rain it might sound odd to some people but to me it does not matter what weather there is (providing it is not iced up and slippery), then aslong as I can still walk off I go as I feel good every time I go out, and what is more if you have someone who enjoys it as much as yourself then that is even better.
