Dronrijp in beeld:Dronrijp in view: 10-01-2006.

Dronrijp belongs to the geemente Menulmadadeel. Its is near Menaldum and 'Schatzenburg'. Marja and I went to Dronrijp this week and what a surprise was in store for me. I always thought that Dronrijp was a small village, but it was bigger than what I thought.

Prison, Factory or school.

This building had a warning, it warned people not to go near and not enter the building, as it was not safe. I am not sure if they are going to renovate it, or demolish it. Looks like it could have been a prison, school or factory. We walked along a cycle path (fiets pad), which ran next to a ditch, flanking our right was some very old dutch houses, which were very quaint indeed, and on our right we came across a wood, with a house buried just behind it, it felt so peaceful and had a tranquil feeling about it. It had ivy growing on the walls that was the finishing touch.

We walked back to what we thought was the main square, and turned left and what a surprise we got, there in the distance was a little bricked bridge with a field next to it and in the distance we could see a church steeple.

We decided to walk towards the church and we crossed the bridge and came to what I think is the original part of Dronrijp as we came into a very small street, with lots of little houses that were very old, and came across a bust of Eise Eisinga and the house where he was born.

The houses were built, lining a square, the Hervormder Kerk (which used to be a catholic church), flanked one side, and the houses flanked the other sides of the square.

By one house there is a stone plaque, next to the front door, with engravings: Eise Eisinga was born here etc.

Dronrijp has a few historical people such as an artist :

We found a bust of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema holding a palet with paint, paintbrushes, in his hands, in the town square in Dronrijp.

An astronomer.Name : Eise Eisinga.Born :   21st February 1744.

You can still see this magnificent planeterium working today, you can visit, The Eisinga Planeterium, E. Eisingastraat 3, Franeker.

Eise Eisinga was a woolcomber and a amateur astronomer.

We then walked around the Hervormde Kerk, which is beautiful, it still has its original door, with its door handle and knocker, it is of a lion.

The Prince Bernhard society gives funds towards the up keep of this church.

We visited the graves, then found a house, with a stone plaque, engraved was the exact replica of the church, its towers, and bell fry, inbedded in its brick work, by the front door.  There was a sign hanging outside the door, "steenbewerke", (stone engraver), it was absolutly wonderful.

This was a old age home. (I think previously it used to be stables for horses, and was changed into a old age home, like in Marssum by the Poptaslot). As we were walking around Dronrijp, who ever we came across, young or old or little children, would greet us, we have never had so many good mornings said to us. Well Dronrijp you certainly beat Steins, you are a very friendly community
