Boksum-Boxsum- November 2006

We walked from Blessum to Boksum once again over the farmers fields,it was once again a lovely winters day, clear, a cold nip in the airand sunny, slightly cloudy and overcast.
What we did not know was that it was to be our last walk with Annie, due to health reasons, also very busy had to leave our group.  Good byeAnnie and I hope all goes well with you, it was very nice having you inour group, we shall miss you.

As we approached Boksum we saw the church in the distance, it was ona mound/hill which was man made (terp) .  It was a lovely church andhad a lovely lane behind and what caught our eyes was a wagon which wasfor used to carry the coffins of the deceased for funeral servicesdrawn by horses I think.

As we entered deeper into the village we came across some niceinteresting buildings like this one, which I am not sure if it is theold station building which looks as if it is used for a business now.

The main road in the village is very pretty a lot of houses lining the street.

Main street.

There was also a nice manor house behind an iron fence.

Marja on a narrow bridge.

Once again we came across these narrow wooden bridges, here is marjaon one. (sorry no foto). There is no way I would cycle across this I would certainly fall off, rather push the bike in front of me. Just as well we were walkingacross the bridge.

Boksum (old Nederlands word Boxum is not used anymore).

Boksum falls under the municipality (Gemeente) Menaldumadeel,Province Friesland, has now about 400 people. It lies southwest fromleeuwarden.Just like the rest of the surrounding villages it too stands on theedge of the Middle sea (Middelzee). The old Middle sea dyk(Middelzeedijk) is still a silent witness there from.

The Saint Margaret church is also built on top of a hill/mound(terp, heuvel). The church was built around the 1100 and was extendedin the 1300.

During the 80 years war the Spanish troops from King Philip ii werecamped there, 17 january 1586, the battle of Boksum. There is a memoryplaque in side the church commerating the dead, they say in this battlea thousand lost their lives.

From 1883 till 1938 Boksum with its twin village Jellum had a railstation and rail line, from Leeuwarden to stavoren, Jellum-Boxsum line.

Train again, Harlingen-Leeuwarden. (Would have been the old Jellum-Boxum line in 1883-1983).

As we crossed the fields going back to the car we came across this field with cattle on.
The famous Friesian cows.

I believe that there is a place to stay in Boksum for  bed andbreakfast, they now have place also for caravans, for more informationcontact the below address and telefoon number .
