It was sunny, but a bit chilly when we set out for Wierum, Marja, Annie and myself. The wind was quite strong. The sights from the dyke were lovely. Wierum lies on the edge of theWadden Sea, (WaddenZee). West of the village Nes.
The church was built around the year 1100 on a mound (terp).
The church used to be in the center of the village, now lies on the edge,
due to a great storm and poor dyke maintenance alot of the village was swallowed by the sea, hence a big dyke running alongside of the village.
The Weather vane on top of the church is of a ship in full sail.
Today one can walk along the sea dyke from village to village,
such as Harlingen to Makkum, right the way around the coastal
villages to Wierum.
Wierum is also very popular for the Waaden walk tour, "waddenlooptocht".
This is where you walk on the sea bed to one of the islands, Ameland,
in this case.
If you want to do one of these walks please contact the nearest 'VVV kiosk', (Tourism Information shop), to book and see the times.
DO NOT TRY IT ALONE, IT IS DANGEROUS !!!!
One must go with a specialised guide to do this and in groups.
Wierum comes under the Municipality (Gemeente) of Dongeradeel.
Walking back from wierum along the cycle track at the bottom of the dyke, we came across sheep, but how sad, we saw one lamb that looked dead, and a mother lying on its side having trouble to stand up, we did not know how to do this, so on our way back to the car Annie, a person in our group knew of someone in the area, where we went pronto and told her and she said she would get in touch with the authorities.
With this done feeling much better, we proceeded back to Leeuwarden.
Wierum So close to the border. You dont expect a church here.
This ship forming tower plays with the water and the sea.
It even smells like the sea.
In all the ages, with tears, sadness and joy.
It helps the fisherman to go to sea.
Fear and trust They are so close together.
This wonderfull church has opened my heart!
I will come back Wierum.
Marja
