Westeinde-Autumn 26 September 2005.

Today marja and I walked in Westeinde. Why Westeinde. Well of course welive there, due to car problems we decided to share our community withyou all.

We live west of Leeuwarden, and we have quite alot to offer, we have a wonderful and relaxingwandeling route along the Schaapje Dijkje, the path is made from crushed shells, there is a little clump of trees which remind you of a forest and also a jetty (where one can fish) and a huge playground with a foffy-slide, football field, miniture skate boarding park, a rope tower to climb and benches to sit on, and of course we have the military air base on our doorstep from this playground we can see the planes take off. On a clear day we can see the tower from the air base, on a misty day and with fog you cannot see this.

Along the shell path you come along a sloot and bull rushes grow along the waters edge, these bull rushes are extinct Marja tells me and we are not allowed to pick them as there are very few of them.

There are farms with sheeps, cows, horses etc on, pastures as far as the eye can see.The "Wijkvereniging Westeinde" have a coat of arms made of goose feathers and a ink pot with a book with two ww's on, one on each page, why, as most of the streets in Westeinde are named after poets and writters. We were walking around and came across some most unusuall items in some gardens, such as a monkey on a banana and boy what a big banana it is.

Also some soldiers in a plant pot, a big joke of course, (Laurel and Hardy), and a huge varse with gekko's on (lizards), well it does make life interesting does'nt it, and what is so nice we live not far from Marsum about 3 kilometers and there is a bicycle and walking route there and the "poptaslot", so you see there is so much one can do and see if one cares to look around. In the winter what I like, the children of westeinde sometimes if the ditches, (sloots) freeze, they ice-skate, and some times they hold little ice-skating compititions and the mothers all club in and buy chips and sweets for prizes and in the summer they take their boats and row on the sloots, so there is allways something to do come summer, winter, autumn and spring.

So do look around where you live as there is always alot to do and see, and now is the time to clean up our gardens and get them ready for the autumn that has approached us, and buy our bulbs.Happy gardening and walking everyone, till next week.

Leeuwarden-Westeinde cityward:

The municipality of Leeuwarden (Frysxe2n) consists of the city of Leeuwardenand several small villages.

The city of Leeuwarden is divided in severalquarters, like Camminghaburen (which may have a flag based on the colorsof the FC Cambuur (soccer club)) and Westeinde.

Westeinde CoA:

an Empire-shield of green with a red heartshield, chargedwith an open silver book with on each page a black capital W; on to andleft and right of the heartshield with a goosefeather, bending with theform of the heartshield, below an inkpot, all in gold. The shield placedon a white ribbon charged with the text:

WIJKVERENIGING WESTEINDE in greencapitals.

Flag:

four equally wide horizontal stripes of blue and yellow; a redhoist of 1/3 glaglength, charged with a white goosefeather, placed diagonallyfrom the bottomhoist; the feather is next to a white inkpot of 1/6 flagheight.

The flag is based on older proposals for Leeuwarder quarter-societies,namely the Leeuwarder cityflag with a red hoist as symbol for the building(red brick houses), charged with elements characteritic of the quarter.

For the "Wijkvereniging Westeinde" the choice was made for a goosefeatherand an inkpot, because the streets have been named after writers and poets.

The colors red and white are the colors of the old Frisian division ofOostergo, of which Leeuwarden was the capital.

The CoA is based on the same theme: red buildings in a green quarter.

The heartshield (in de colors of Oostergo) shows the product of the

writers: the book. In the book two W's - the initials of the quarter-society.
