Continuation of Dronrijp in view. 16-01-2006.

This Monday we went back to Dronrijp, as we felt we had not quite completed our walk.Last week we came across a statue of oxen, when I went back, I found out they werecalled "Rypster Oxen".  The inscription underneath was in Fries, and I did not understandthe inscription.

We then decided to walk to the Van Harinxsma Canal, and we found something of a historical nature, something to do with eleven men, the canal and something to do with the rail line(I think).  Again I am not to sure what it was about, but as soon as I find out I will let you know.

We continued walking over the bridge over the Van Harinksma Canal, and it was all iced up, the ducks were standing on the ice, it was so cold it was -3 degrees, not that it matted to the ducks, but I would like to differ, Marja and I were freezing, I had gloves on, a head band for the ears, and a thick coat, but by heavens it was still cold and with the wind I am sure it was more than -3. We walked a little way out of Dronrijp and took some photo's of the landscape, there was still snow laying along the side of the ditches (sloats) from just after new year, it was very beautiful.

We decided to walk back to Dronrijp,  we went back to the Hervormde church, parked the car and walked around, we went looking for the convent, (klooster) that used to be there, but I think it was pulled down or there never was one, but we found a lovely route to walk and followed the path that went along the side of the church, next to a ditch full of water (which was now solid ice), and crossed a wooden bridge only to discover that we came out to where we first started last week and we entered the square where all the houses were built by the church (that we saw last week), and came to the houses where Eisa Eisinga was born, how delightful.

We then returned to Leeuwarden (it was just a bit too cold with the wind).

Well I enjoyed Dronrijp very much, but as you well know (or if you did not, you know now), that in The Netherlands, one begins the conversation with the weather, when someone talks to you, and seem that they end with the weather when one goes home, now I see why.

Till next week, who knows where we will be, all I know it is always exciting and interesting.
