Ried.

Ried (Fries : Rei).

Ried2

Ried-Topleft-what used to be a convent (now houses).center- What must of been afactory before is now used as a business.Bottom left-church-bottomright-bakers museum (looks like).

We went to Ried, it was a lovely sunny day.  It is a lovely village, and has a lot of history.

For instance in the middle ages the former Ried Stream used to be agully from the Wadden Sea (waddenzee), this silted up and damned in andthe clay became very furtile agricultural soil.

The Coat of Arms,  (which you will find on the web-site, from Jarrig Baker).
Flags of the world (fotw).  It is very informative.

The Coat of Arms of Ried is a face of a cat, with a whitebackground, (which represents the clouds), the blue in the middle isthe stream (former Ried stream), the yellow the wheat, the three greenclovers the cattle.  The face of the cat represents the residents knownas  Redstar cats, 'Redster Katten'.

Ried falls under the Municipality (Gemeente) Franekeradeel.

Ried is a very old village, the oldest part of Ried lies around thechurch.  In the 18th centuary that constituted the whole village.

The Dr. Vitus Ringerstreet and the Pastor-Lane were there already aswas the road to Piens.  Since the year 2000 Ried has grown much bigger.

There is a lovely route that you can walk and if you walk along themain street in Ried until you see a sign on the left hand side of  theroad which reads 'It Kattegat'.This is the path you must take, it is absolutely beautiful.  youwalk up a double gravel path and there are a lot of tree's, bush, wildflowers etc. You also walk along what is known as 'It Kattegat' andthere is a little harbour there where you can put your boat and campthere.  It has a trekking hut that you can hire.  A lovely littlepeaceful holiday resort for boating and camping fanatics.

There is quite a lot to do, walking, boating, walking the(jabikpaad) route for instance, where people like Saint James, (whichthe dutch name is Jabik for James) walked , which is known as 'Santiagode campostilla'.  Which thousands of Pilgrams walk each year.

Here in The Netherlands you can walk from St Jacobparochie to SaintJacobparochie, as a pilgrams route if you wanted, also right  up toZwarte Haan (which I mentioned in one of my earlier chapters).

You can get get a brochure from the Municipality St Annaparochie,(Gemeente  Annaparochie), post box (postbus) 94, 9076 ZN, St.Annaparochie, called, 't Bildt for (euro's) 3.50.

At this webpage are the village flag and CoA of the famous village of Ried, Frjentsjerteradiel, Fryslxe2n, the Netherlands.Of course it's most famous 'cause my granddad Pieter Feddema was born there.Info about flag and CoA from the site:The blue waving bar in the village's coat of arms is the symbol of the former Ried stream, which in the Middle Ages was a gully from the Waddenzee. This gully became silted up and, dammed in, shaped the the clay into very fertile agricultural soil. This is represented by the blue bar and the two corn ears. The cattle-breeding and mixed industry in the area are symbolized by  the three green clovers. The catface is the symbol of Ried's residents, who are nicknamed "Riedster katten", Riedster cats.

image from this webpage, reported by Jarig Bakker, 13 Nov 2002 The flag reflects the coat of arms - the yellow section represents the waving corn fields, the blue the Riedstream, and the white the clouds and the sky.
