Leeuwarden : 01-05- 2006.

We went down town Leeuwarden.

Today as marja had no car, and as we had already walked in our areaWesteinde before, I suggested to Marja we walk in our own townLeeuwarden, as we did not have anything on our own town, so we hoppedon our bicycles and cycled into a historical part of Leeuwarden,(though there are many, this is a portion of it).

Leeuwarden (Frisian: Louwert) is a municipality and the capital of theDutch province of Friesland.  It is situated in the north of the country.

Leeuwarden was once the Middelzee, this capital has been occupied sincearound the10th century. but only got city rights much later roundabout 1435.

The Old Town Hall/Oude Stad huis.

We started walking down the Eewal, here is where the old Town Hall (Stadhuis)  is situated, in this building they have all the political meetings between all the political parties, they have the First Eerste)and Second (Tweede kamer) rooms here. There was so many interesting building along this route, there was a door with a figure head on it that I think is related to the famous spy Mata Hari.

The Orange Beer House pub/Het Oranje Beerhuis

There was a lovely pub which the name captivated me, the name was 'Orange Beer House', (Oranjebier Huis), how appropiate as the Royals, Orange of Nassua (Oranje van Nassua),  used to live here in Leeuwarden, the 'Princess court Museum' (Pricesshof Museum), as it is known as today, which is situated in 'Greater Church Street' (Grooter Kerk Straat), was their palace. It gives one an important feeling, to think the Royal family actually livedhere, on the 25th April 2006, Her Royal Majesty, Queen Beatrix and the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, visited here.

We Walked along the Eewal up a side street and came out by the Jacobianchurch (which used to be a Roman Catholic church,of the 13th centuaryDominican Monastery) is now a Dutch reformed church.  The choir which was damanged  by the French and later restored became the burial place of the Frisian branch of the Nassau family.

We then came across a lot of individual old age homes, but beautiful houses all next door to each other with the most beautiful mazed gardens all sorts of shapes and designs, and beautiful flowers of all kinds, some I have never seen before lovely colours.Though my grandmother lived in one of these old age homes, sadly to say she has died.

When you saw all these houses and gardens your one thought is howmagnificent this must look in winter with all the snow laying on theground. When I am old I wish I could live there, you would never get me out.

The Oldehove

Leeuwarden is full of history and historical buildings. There is the Oldehove, (our leaning tower of pisa), the Prince's Garden (Princesen Thuin), the Fries Museum, the Jewish school etc, and of  course lots of clothing shops, restaurants, cinema's, and bars like 'Paddy o'Ryans', an irish bar very popular and very nice (I have this on the authority of mychildren who have been there)and for the art lovers art galleries.

Leeuwarden has a lot to offer to visitors who visit, also to their owncommunity.  I have lived in Leeuwarden for 11 years and I am very happy here, I would not like to live in a big town like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag. GOOD OLD LEEUWARDEN, as they say in Dutch 'HUP HOLLAND'  I say, 'HUP LEEUWARDEN.'
