Holwerd Harbour : 25.04.2006.

The weather was perfect.  It was overcast, not too cold and windy, just a light breeze with a tinge of salt sea smell drifting http://friesianwalks.weblog.nl/wp-admin/upload.phptowards you.

We had parked the car by the dyke where we last stopped and climbed to the top of the dyke.

sheep grazing, standing, lambs nuzzling their mothers.

Oh, the view, once one got their breath back from crawling up the side of the dyke, the meadows between us and the sea were beautiful.

What a sight, there was a goat and some sheep's roaming around the dyke, all sorts of colours, plain white, or white and black, plain black.  There were lambs and they looked so cute, some were suckling from their mothers.  When we walked
past the sheep they just ambled to the side of the path or ran away, but the mothers kept a wary eye on you.

Holwerdhaven3305 coral plants.

The coral plants and the dried reeds and grass gave a most spectacularview and colour, the brown from the grass, mauve colour from the coral that was flowering and the blue from the sea behind gave one a restful and yet a feeling that you wanted to run down into the meadow and sit down and have a picnic. Just sit there and drink up all this tranquillity and peace, what pleasure one can get. We then came across a wooden gate recessed in a wooden fence that ran along the dyke (to stop the sheep from roaming into the road).we then looked to see if we could open it, but it was locked. We saw a wooden bench on the other side of thefence and there was nothing for it but climb the fence and climb overonto the bench.

We then proceeded to do this, with much laughter between the three of us, as I said to Annie and Marja, knowing my luck I'll get stuck, but thankfully this time I was spared this.

We found a cycle track leading along side the main road to the harbour, where you catch the ferry to Ameland.

Ferry arriving from Ameland, in Holwerd dock.

As we arrived at the harbour we were just in time to watch the ferry come in from Ameland, what a size, it was huge and there were so many people waiting for the ferry to dock.

Annie, Marja, and myself messed around a bit, took photos of us on the harbour, and I took a sneak photo of Marja and Annie, (Marja was telling Annie how her camera worked).

Here are a few photo's of the ferry.  Much bigger than the one that I catch to to England from the Hoek van Holland, the HSS stenaline.

We then started our way back, we went to find the departure times from Holwerd to Ameland, as Marja and I are going to see Annie there in the 2nd week in May.
So do look out for my story on Ameland, (though it is not part of Friesland), I have never been to the islands.
